Dr. Xu Qiyuan, Senior Research Fellow of IWEP, CASS visited the IIMA
On November 20, 2013, the IIMA had a visit of Dr. Xu Qiyuan, Senior Research Fellow of Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and 2 other Chinese economists. Together with several guests of intellectuals, we had a deep discussion on current situation of internationalization of RMB. Mr. Sakuma, our General Manager and Chief Economist, moderated the discussion and we exchanged valuable views especially on the policy of Chinese authorities, current situation of Chinese companies on RMB business and Japanese experience of currency internalization during one and a half hour meeting.
The IIMA received a visit of UTCC professors
From October 6 to 11, 2013, the IIMA received a visit of Thai academic group led by Dr. Savaraj Sachchamarga, Honorary Director of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and a board member of the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of their visit to Japan was to have interviews and construct networks with Japanese government officials, business persons and academians in order to build up curricula on high-speed railroad system and logistics in the UTCC. As part of IIMA’s core activity of supporting international economic and academic cooperation, we worked as a coordinator for their activities in Tokyo by attending them and arranging appointments with relevant parties in Japan.
Visit of Economists from the IMF to the IIMA
On August 19, 2013, the IIMA received a delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) headed by Ms. Yan Sun, Deputy Unit Chief, Strategy, Policy, and Review Department, and accompanied by Mr. Niklas Westelius, Senior Economist of the same department, and Ms. Tomomi Sekioka, Communications Manager, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. We exchanged frank views on a wide range of issues, such as long-term prospects for the world economy in the next 10-20 years, factors that may shape societies and economies in the time ahead, and the expected role of the IMF under the circumstances of a changing framework of the international society and its major players (e.g., division of responsibility between regional organizations and the IMF, the appropriateness of its communications with non-state actors).
The IIMA and Fudan University held a seminar on “Asian financial cooperation -the role of Japan and China-”
On August 2 2013, Fudan University, China and the IIMA held a seminar on “Asian financial cooperation -the role of Japan and China-”. We invited experts from private and public sectors as well as academia and exchanged many views on Chinese deregulation of finance issues, experience of Japan, importance of financial cooperation between Japan and China.

Mr. Koji Sakuma, the chief economist of the IIMA, participated in a symposium Bellwether
Series 2013:Japan held by the Economist Group in Tokyo on May 30th 2013. He joined a panel
discussion on the internationalization of the Renminbi and exchanged views and opinions on the
issue with other panelists.
Visit of the Development Association for Youthleaders (DAY)
The IIMA received a visit of a group of young business persons who belong to the Development Association for Youthleaders (DAY) on April 19 2013. It was under a program of the association for training young leaders from its member companies. Mr. Koji Sakuma, the chief economist of the IIMA, provided them with a lecture on the Abenomics and the outlook of the yen that covered basic theories of foreign exchange rates and the recent development of financial markets.
After the lecture, we had a small reception where the participants were exchanging views and opinions with the staff of the IIMA on the economic and financial environments as well as strategies and challenges of each company they represented.
Visit of CEO of TAC, a French think-tank, to the IIMA
On March 29 2013, the IIMA held a small seminar on the Chinese economy and politics by an invited presenter, Mr. Thierry Apoteker, CEO of TAC (Thierry Apoteker Consulting), a French think-tank. Mr. Apoteker presented precise analysis of facts and well balanced but insightful outlook of the country. The lecture was attentively received and was followed by hot discussions.
The IIMA held a seminar on “the Abenomics and the value of the yen.”
On February 14 2013, the IIMA held a seminar on “the Abenomics and the value of the yen.” We invited foreign government officials, bankers and other representatives from India, China, Korea, Australia, the United States, Germany, Russia, Italy and the IMF who are based in Tokyo. Forty minutes presentation by our chief economist was followed by very hot Q&A sessions that reflected a strong interest of foreigners in the current macro economic and market developments in Japan. After the seminar, the participants enjoyed a wine party with genial but stimulus conversation.
